for the roses

joni mitchell’s ‘for the roses’ album is playing while we write and collect the pictures for this post

‘for the roses’ is also the name we chose for the collection of rose sculptures we’ve created over the years

this arrangement of 36 sculpted roses in a vase was just named and signed today

we chose ‘golden hour’ and it didn’t take long for us to settle on the name

‘golden hour’ - from the for the roses collection, april 2026

our first experimentations with making roses was in 2014 when a small show called ‘the florist’ was exhibited in our studio on broadway & main in downtown fort myers, fl

here’s the promo poster we made for it

and here are the awfully pretty flowers we showed off in their freshly sculpted bottle vases

this was around the time we started teaching masking tape sculpting and giving folks an idea of how liberating it is when using such an unusual medium for art making

the classes were joyful
we’ve been doing them ever since

the video below is one we put together to promote the rose class

it’s a little fast moving
only a minute long
but you get the main idea

we actually put together quite a few of these little promo videos for our sculpting classes
you can see them over on our youtube channel if you’d like

here, we’ll point the way …

Jeff & Dale Ocasio

Jeff & Dale Ocasio collaborate on building characters and small worlds that live somewhere between folk art and storybooks. Sculpting with masking tape over wire and reclaimed objects is where their artwork begins.

Each sculpture is encased with layers of acid‐free glue, color is added with more layers of acrylics, mixed media and protected with matte varnish. Many of their sculptures are featured in their own original digital illustrations.
